Cultivating Holocaust remembrance: the duty of democratic societies
Seventy-eight years on from the Holocaust, the community of democracies commemorates the victims of this unparalleled disaster in human history.
With this in mind, the Minister of the Interior Adrian Efros, together with the State Secretary of the Ministry of the Interior Andrei Cecoltan, organised a meeting with the United Kingdom Special Envoy for Post-Holocaust Affairs, Lord Eric Pickles. and with the Ambassador of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to the Republic of Moldova, Stephen Fisher.
At the beginning of the discussion, it was mentioned that the Ministry endeavours to become a reformed and modern institution, which will bring tangible results for the consolidation of peace and stability in the region. In this sense, Secretary of State Andrei Cecoltan said, “Our moral responsibility is to promote universal human values, fundamental human rights and freedoms, tolerance and to fight anti-Semitism and any other form of discrimination.”
The internal affairs system has already undertaken a number of actions aimed at improving the situation in the hate crime prevention segment, including the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the Jewish Community of the Republic of Moldova and the World Jewish Congress (WJC) in July 2018. This document aims to strengthen co-operation in areas of common interest and to prevent ethnically motivated hate crimes.
