The new prosecutor general intends to focus on high-profile cases
Prosecutor General Ion Munteanu, sworn in on June 1, outlined his priorities for the post.
The new prosecutor general intends to focus on high-profile cases.
“I’m not actually starting a new activity, I’m continuing what I started. The priorities and concept remain the same. The Prosecutor General is directly responsible for two specialized prosecutor’s offices – the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office and the Prosecutor’s Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Cases, where the most complex and high-profile cases are considered.
We will prioritize criminal cases, monitor the results of inspections and analyze the situation after the 20-day period.
We are also in the process of reforming the AP and will ensure that investigations are carried out with maximum efficiency, including in cases of bank fraud and cases related to organized crime that may threaten the security of the state,” said Ion Munteanu, writes bani.md
In the context of a recent statement by Maia Sandu, who noted that less is being done in the field of justice than is being said, Munteanu said:
“We know that the prosecutor’s office is not doing enough to make society feel that justice has been done. However, we must understand that not only the prosecutor’s office is responsible for the image and work of the judiciary. The activities of prosecutors are reflected in court decisions. If we do not have a speedy investigation criminal cases in court, the opinion will remain that the prosecutor’s office is not doing its job effectively. I’m not saying that the prosecutor’s office is working perfectly now, but efforts are being made.”
The Attorney General stressed the importance of cleaning up the justice system and expressed optimism about the prosecutor evaluation process. A week after anti-corruption prosecutors were notified of the probe, neither had resigned.
“This year has been marked by the review process. It is imperative that this exercise is carried out quickly so that we can build a system of those who pass the assessment and focus on broad and complex investigations. I am optimistic because we have not received resignations associated with this process, which suggests that prosecutors have understood the importance of this process and are confident that they will be able to prove their financial and ethical integrity,” Munteanu said.
