Government will ask Parliament to extend the state of emergency for another 60 days

The state of emergency in our country could be extended for another 60 days, starting on 2 October 2023. A decision to this effect was approved at a Cabinet meeting, on the proposal of the Commission for Exceptional Situations, chaired by Prime Minister Dorin Recean. The document is to be submitted to the legislature for adoption.

The need to extend the state of emergency was determined by the persistent security risks to our country, as a result of the Russian Federation’s brutal war against Ukraine, and for the continued provision of infrastructure, energy and gas services.

Members of the Committee on Exceptional Situations noted that ahead of the cold season, there is a risk that Russian armed forces could step up cruise missile and drone attacks on energy infrastructure in the neighbouring country, which could lead to disruption of electricity supplies in Moldova, as happened last year.

Dependence on energy infrastructure in southern Ukraine is a major vulnerability with an impact on the stability and energy balance of the Republic of Moldova, as well as a potential economic and social impact. In this context, the extension of the state of emergency would allow the Government to take measures to ensure, maintain and strengthen Moldova’s energy security.

Potential risks in the field of cyber and information security, communication and transport infrastructure, which could negatively affect the national economy and the mobility of the population, have also been taken into account.

Also today, the members of the Commission for Exceptional Situations allocated 3.3 million lei from the Government Intervention Fund for the removal of the consequences of the damage caused by the rains and gusts of wind on 25 July 2023. From these funds, 2.4 million lei will be distributed to the Municipality of Sărata Galbenă, Hîncești district, for the capital repair of the roof of the local kindergarten. Another 197 thousand lei have been allocated to the Temeleuti village hall, Floresti district, for the reconstruction of the damaged roof of the gymnasium gallery, and 660 thousand lei will be distributed to the Ciripcău village hall, Floresti district, for the reconstruction of the damaged roof of the gymnasium canteen.
