Munteanu: As long as Stoianoglo’s status is not clear, another head of the GP cannot be elected

An unclear situation has developed in the Prosecutor General’s Office. It is unknown when the new head of the institution may be appointed, whether it will be acting Prosecutor General Ion Munteanu.

Munteanu explained to the Press Club of Journalists that until the status of Alexandru Stoianoglo is resolved, it is impossible to hold a new contest, rupor.md reported

“He is an appointed prosecutor who is currently not fulfilling his duties for various reasons, including a pending criminal case. Until the issue of the status of the prosecutor-general is resolved, I do not see a real possibility of announcing a competition for the position of the future prosecutor-general. If simply, the acting Prosecutor General should either be sent to resign, or should resign, or possibly be banned from holding state and public office,” Ion Munteanu said.

There is no timeframe for holding the post of acting prosecutor general, Munteanu emphasised.

As a reminder, Prosecutor General Alexandru Stoianoglo was dismissed from his post on charges of illegal enrichment. On 5 October 2021, Stoianoglo was detained in the building of the Prosecutor General’s Office.
