Republic of Moldova encouraged by EU officials to continue justice reforms and fight against corruption

28 September 2023, Brussels – On the second day of her visit to Brussels, Minister of Justice Veronica Mihailov-Moraru met with European Commission Vice-President Vĕra Jourová. During the discussions, the Minister of Justice reviewed developments in justice reform and actions taken to increase confidence in the judicial system and to ensure the functionality of the self-administration bodies of judges and prosecutors, as well as measures to strengthen the powers of anti-corruption authorities and to provide the levers necessary for the effective implementation of their mandate. It also expressed its firm commitment to ensure transparency and dialogue in relation to the processes promoted by the Ministry.

The Vice-President of the European Commission welcomed the courage of the Government to engage in promoting such systemic and complex reforms, noting that “countries that make considerable efforts, such as the Republic of Moldova, need to be encouraged”. In the context of the Republic of Moldova being a candidate country, Vĕra Jourová explained the importance of engaging in the EU Rule of Law Reporting framework, a mechanism applicable to EU Member States so far.

Also today, Minister Veronica Mihailov-Moraru held talks with the Head of Directorate Georgia, Republic of Moldova, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Belarus of the European External Action Service (EEAS), Dorota Dlouchy-Suliga. During the meeting, the parties exchanged views on the dynamics of the implementation of reforms in the field of justice, efforts to strengthen anti-corruption institutions and mechanisms. Director Dlouchy-Suliga appreciated the constructive dialogue with the Venice Commission throughout the elaboration and finalization of the important projects promoted and those in the process of being promoted for the justice sector.

At the end of her visit to Brussels, Veronica Mihaolov-Moraru visited the headquarters of the Mission of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union, where she had discussions with Mrs. Daniela Morari, Head of the Mission, and Mr. Viorel Ciubotaru, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of our country to the Kingdom of Belgium.
