Bilateral meetings and new areas of cooperation on justice
On the sidelines of the Informal Conference of Ministers of Justice of the Council of Europe member states, which took place in Riga, the Minister of Justice, Veronica Mihailov-Moraru, had several bilateral meetings with counterparts from the participating countries, as well as with the Ambassador of the Republic of Moldova in Latvia.
During the meeting with the Latvian Minister of Justice, Inese Libina-Egnere, who was also the host of the event, Veronica Mihailov-Moraru appreciated the support offered to our country at the 2021 Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly plenary on the reform agenda and the situation in Moldova. The two ministers discussed a number of topics of common interest, including the adoption by the Republic of Moldova of best practices from Latvia’s experience in adapting national legislation to that of the European Union.
At the same time, the Ministers of Justice of the Republic of Moldova and Latvia also discussed the recognition and legalisation of official documents issued by Moldovan authorities on the territory of the Republic of Latvia. As a result, they discussed the need to hold legal consultations on the interpretation and application of certain provisions of the Treaty between the Republic of Moldova and the Republic of Latvia on legal assistance and legal relations in civil, family and criminal matters.
It was also agreed to exchange visits at senior ministerial level and to develop joint cooperation projects.
Veronica Mihailov-Moraru also had a bilateral meeting with her Romanian counterpart, Alina-Stefania Gorghiu. The ministers discussed the state of play of the bilateral cooperation projects established during the Romanian delegation’s visit to Chisinau in August.
Last but not least, Veronica Mihailov-Moraru met with the Deputy Minister of Justice of Italy, Francesco Paolo Sisto, with whom she exchanged views on the plan to finalize and sign the Memorandum of Cooperation between the two countries in the field of justice. They also discussed the process of starting cooperation in the areas of mediation, civil forfeiture and anti-corruption measures, as well as the use of Italy’s experience in these areas.
“I thanked my counterparts for the support given to Moldova in the process of integration into the European Union. The Ministry of Justice is making every effort to fulfil the commitments undertaken in the field of justice, and the openness and experience of our foreign partners is very valuable for us”, said Veronica Mihailov-Moraru.
On the occasion of her visit to Latvia, Minister Mihailov-Moraru also had a meeting with the Ambassador of our country in Riga, H.E. Andrian Roșa, with whom she discussed the assistance needs of Moldovan citizens living in Latvia.
