Post-storm aid not only delivered but also installed by MAI for citizens in need in at least two households

These days, firefighters and volunteers from the MAI have been coming to the aid of elderly residents whose homes have been damaged, repairing roofs destroyed by last week’s storms.

Thus, 86-year-old Alexandra, from Alexăndreni, Edineț district, whose roof was damaged by the storm and heavy rains, was helped by MAI employees, who managed to replace the slate sheets on the roof of her house, because she was unable to do so.

Alexandra Croitori, 86 years old, resident of the village Alexăndreni, Edineț, said: “Here I was in the evening, I was going to close the chicken and I went one step forward, but a slate fell right in front of me. I’ve never seen anything like it. There was hail…but there was no wind like that. The bridges were falling down… the people were crying”.

Vitalie Șchiopu, colonel, deputy head of the Emergency Situations Department of Edineț of the IGSU of the MAI, said: “We are in the household of the citizen Alexandra who suffered from the weather and natural disaster. We intend with slate sheets to cover this house qualitatively and in time to cope with the things”.

There are several elderly people whose households were destroyed, including 90-year-old Larisa, who lives alone. The roof of her house has fallen in and the slate sheets on the roof have also been shattered. With the help of the MAI forces, shoulder to shoulder, the necessary materials were unloaded and a hand was given in repairing the roof.

Larisa Dolința, 90 years old, resident of Alexăndreni village, Edineț recalled: “It was thundering, falling off the bridge. When it thundered I started shouting at Ionel to come into the house”.

The household of 90-year-old Larisa Dolința was also repaired by firefighters and MAI volunteers.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs continues to come to the aid of citizens in need following the storms at the end of July 2023. Thus, MAI teams went to several households, not only to deliver the necessary materials, but also to help elderly people with their installation.

Alexăndreni locality in Edineț district was one of those that experienced a major impact following the storms in the last week of July. Along the way we will also go to other localities, other households, where people really have no possibility of help, even if materials are delivered to their homes.

Liliana Pușcașu, colonel, press officer of the IGSU of the MAI said: “Now the rescuers are doing their best to give them back this hope, to be safe, to be protected. The Ministry of Internal Affairs is with the people who have suffered from the storms”.

It should be recalled that following the decision taken by the Commission for Exceptional Situations and approved at the meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers, it was decided that the localities of the districts with major damage as a result of heavy rains and gusts of wind, will benefit from aid to carry out repair and construction work on housing, administrative and cultural buildings. The materials granted represent around 65 000 corrugated roofing sheets and almost 500 m3 of timber totalling over 16 000 000 lei.

In the coming days, the process of transporting and distributing building materials will continue to help citizens in the north and centre of the country.
