Moldova and its citizens are getting used to living in debt, increasing their indebtedness to creditors. INFOTAG reports that in January-April, the population borrowed more than 1.2 billion lei from banks and non-bank lending organisations

The total volume of loans to households reached 33 billion lei. In 2021, it was 31.7 billion lei, and in 2020 – 23.1 billion lei.

Specialists draw attention to the fact that a dangerous layer of borrowers appears in the category of borrowers, who do not escape arrears and sink deeper and deeper into the debt hole.

Expert Veaceslav Ionitsa says that in 2021 Moldovans officially borrowed about 700 million lei per month, and in 2022 accounts payable grew by about 325 million lei per month.

“Out of the total volume of 33 billion lei of household loans, 23.8 billion lei go to the banking sector and 9.2 billion lei to non-bank credit institutions,” the expert said.

He cited data from a sociological survey conducted in May, according to which the number of respondents who said they have loans fell from 28.9% to 25% this year compared to 2021.

“The majority – 20.2% said they have credit in commercial banks, 10.9% – in non-bank credit institutions, 9% – from relatives and friends and 1.5% – from moneylenders,” the expert said, drawing attention to the fact that there are more citizens in Moldova with credit debt from three sources.
