Sentenced to 18 years in prison for the rape and robbery of a 71-year-old woman

On October 24, 2023, a sentence was handed down by which a 33-year-old man was found guilty of committing the crime of rape (art. 171 paragraph (1) of the Criminal Code) and robbery committed by breaking and entering , causing damage in considerable proportions (art. 188 para. (2) letter d), f) of the Criminal Code), establishing a punishment in the form of 18 years of imprisonment, with the execution of the sentence in the penitentiary of semi-closed type.

During the criminal investigation, it was established that the defendant, acting with direct intent, aware of the social danger of his actions, on July 29, 2023, at approximately midnight, with the purpose of evasion, broke into the home of a 71-year-old woman from a village in the south of the country, and threatening her with death, stole her money in the amount of 150 lei.

In continuation of his criminal actions, by applying physical coercion and taking advantage of the victim’s inability to defend herself due to her advanced age, he performed several sexual acts with her.

The same defendant, with the same purpose, broke into the old woman’s home the next day, where he had forced sexual acts with her and stole 200 lei from her by threatening her with death.

The defendant admitted his guilt in committing the acts he was accused of.

This is not the first offense of criminal order, having been previously convicted for similar acts.

The sentence can be appealed within 15 days to the Comrat Court of Appeal.

Note: A person accused of committing a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a final court decision.
