Minister of Justice Veronica Mihailov-Moraru met with members of the Romanian Superior Council of Magistracy

29 September, Chisinau – Minister of Justice Veronica Mihailov-Moraru met with members of the Romanian Superior Council of Magistracy to exchange views on the situation in the justice system and the challenges faced by the authorities in Moldova and Romania.

The meeting was attended by members of the Superior Council of Magistracy and the Superior Council of Prosecutor’s Office. Discussions focused on the reforms initiated in the field of justice in the Republic of Moldova, the following priorities and needs, in the context of the country’s status as a candidate country for accession to the European Union, as well as Romania’s experience in this regard.

The Minister of Justice spoke about the process of extraordinary external evaluation of judges and prosecutors, the revision of the regulatory framework on the mechanism of disciplinary responsibility, selection and evaluation by peers, as well as the expectations that are from the new Superior Council of Magistracy. Veronica Mihailov-Moraru encouraged the intensification of cooperation between the administrative bodies of both countries.

“We are glad that the Superior Council of Magistracy has a new composition and is functional. There are many challenges ahead, which need to be addressed by the judicial management body. The Ministry of Justice, within the limits of its competence, is contributing to improving the situation in the justice sector and to the promotion of judges and prosecutors’ positions, once the evaluation exercise is over, as well as positions for court and prosecution staff. In this regard, we are working to promote gradual salary increases,” stressed Minister Mihailov-Moraru.

At the same time, it was agreed that the members of the High Council of the Prosecutor’s Office will undertake a working visit to Bucharest to learn from Romania’s experience in drafting the regulations governing the work of the colleges, following the new legislative changes in this area.

Another topic was the organisation of the third edition of the Moldova-Romania Forum in the field of justice, to be held early next year.
