The citizenship law will be tightened in Moldova: knowledge of Romanian may become mandatory
The head of the Public Services Agency (PSA), Mircea Esanu, said that the new changes will be presented to the government by the end of May.
Also, the head of the ASU does not exclude the possibility of introducing mandatory knowledge of the Romanian language for those wishing to obtain citizenship, reports tv8.md
Esanu clarified that work is currently underway in Romania to tighten procedures for obtaining citizenship, and the Moldovan authorities are working closely with their Romanian colleagues.
“In Romania we are talking about amending the law, they are seriously tightening it, according to strict European standards.
And we are working on a new law. I am confident that by the end of May we will introduce a new citizenship law to the government, which will be stricter. Thanks also to our much more frequent exchange of information with the National Citizenship Authority, we were able to uncover the schemes that were going on here.
I do not exclude the obligation to know the Romanian language. Romania is also striving for this. I understand that for those who have lived their lives and were born in the Russian Federation, this will be difficult. But in the current regional circumstancI don’t think that tightening the law is a bad decision,” said the director of the ASU.
Mircea Esanu also emphasized that the number of refusals to grant citizenship is increasing. If in 2022 the applications of 65 people were rejected, then in the first months of this year we already have 67 refusals.
