Another member of the group specializing in “road accident” scams sentenced to 7 years in prison

By the sentence of the Chisinau Court, Buiucani headquarters, dated October 6, 2023, a 40-year-old man was found guilty of committing the crime of fraud, committed by two or more people, causing considerable damage (art. 190 para . (2) letter b), c) of the Criminal Code) , being sentenced to imprisonment for a term of 7 years, with the deprivation of the right to hold positions and exercise activity related to financing for a term of 5 years.

According to the indictment, the defendant, on May 31, 2023, at approximately 5:30 p.m., acting together and in concert with other persons, contacted a man by telephone, and, by misleading him, namely, communicating to him the erroneous information that his daughter would be guilty of committing a road accident resulting in victims, under the pretext of paying the treatment expenses of the people who suffered, they requested the immediate transmission of the sum of 200,000 lei.

Later, continuing his criminal actions, by maintaining in error, in about 20 minutes, the defendant appeared at the man’s home and received the sum of 100,000 lei and 200 US dollars.

The next day, at approximately 6:00 p.m., the defendant, according to the same scheme, telephoned another man, requesting the immediate transmission of a similar amount.

By staying in error, in about 40 minutes, he managed to get 100,000 lei from the injured party. After which, under the pretext that the condition of the alleged victim of the road accident worsened, in approximately 20 minutes, the defendant appeared repeatedly at the man’s residence, requesting and receiving another 3,000 euros.

According to the same scheme, the defendant, a few hours later, obtained 5000 euros from another injured party (a woman) , misleading her as if his niece had caused a road accident .

The defendant admitted his guilt for the act of which he was accused, the case regarding him being examined in a simplified procedure.

The sentence is not final and can be appealed within 15 days at the Chisinau Court of Appeal.

Note: A person accused of committing a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a final court decision.
