The launch of the joint project of the European Union and the Council of Europe “Support for the reform of justice in the Republic of Moldova”

October 17, 2023, Chisinau – The Minister of Justice, Veronica Mihailov-Moraru ,  participated  today  in the launch  of the joint project of of the European Union (EU)  and the Council of Europe  (CoE)  ” Support for justice reform in the Republic of Moldova ” . In the context of the launch event, the first meeting of the Steering Committee   took place , where the action plan for the first year of project implementation was presented and approved.

The purpose  of the project is  to  support the authorities  in order to increase  the independence , responsibility , impartiality and  transparency  of the judicial system, including the  prosecution system ,  in  accordance with the objectives established in the Strategy for ensuring the independence and integrity of the justice sector for the years 2022-2025 . It will also support  the implementation of justice reform ,  in line with European standards ,  with an  increased focus on the recommendations included in  the opinions of the European Commission for Democracy through Law (Venice Commission) and the compliance report of the Group of States Against Corruption (GRECO).   

” On behalf of the Government of the Republic of Moldova, we thank and express our gratitude  to the  Council of Europe and  the European Union for being  with the Ministry of Justice and thus  pushing us to act correctly and professionally , in order to  align ourselves with European values ​​in the field of justice  and respect human rights” ,  emphasized the Minister of Justice, Veronica Mihailov-Moraru. 

The project will run until  November  2026  and has  a budget of 2.7 million euros . The beneficiaries are: the Ministry of Justice,  the Constitutional Court ,  the Superior Council of Magistrates, the Superior Council of Prosecutors  and  the National Institute of Justice .

Officials and experts  of  the EU  and CoE were present  at the event  ,  representatives  of the development partners that support justice reform in the Republic of Moldova,  of the CSM, CSP, INJ,  the Constitutional Court , but also  judges, prosecutors, legal professionals, of society civil.
