5 October 2023, Chisinau – The Ministry of Justice team held a working meeting with representatives of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which is on a fact-finding visit to Moldova.

The meeting reviewed the Ministry of Justice’s initiatives on justice system reform and the fight against corruption, including those stemming from the Memorandum between the Government and the IMF. The Minister of Justice spoke about the status of implementation of the previously agreed Action Plan, as well as the authorities’ efforts to clearly establish the powers of the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (AP) and strengthen it.

“Strengthening the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office is the main focus of our current efforts. A building has been identified and will be subject to technical expertise. In the meantime, a draft law providing for the secondment of officers from the Ministry of Interior and the Intelligence and Security Service for a certain period of time, which is the responsibility of the Prosecutor General, is to be adopted in second reading. In the meantime, a functional analysis on the capacity building of the IPs and other relevant issues is to be carried out within the Anti-Corruption Platform, which also includes Romanian experts, and will be taken into account in the next stage”, stressed the Minister of Justice.

For their part, the IMF experts noted the progress made by the authorities on the AP Capacity Building Action Plan and came up with some recommendations on legislative issues that were submitted for discussion.

The visit of the IMF mission takes place in the context of the assessment for a new financing programme, and one of the conditions is to make progress on the segment of strengthening institutions in the fight against corruption.
