The Law on Citizenship of the Republic of Moldova will be changed

The procedure for recognizing Moldovan citizenship will become more reliable after the inclusion of stricter rules in legislation aimed at preventing risks to state security and public order.

The report on the draft amendments to the citizenship law was approved by members of the Commission on National Security, Defense and Public Order, Noi.md notes.

The document was developed by Igor Kiriyak, a member of the Action and Solidarity party faction.

It proposes making a number of amendments to the law on citizenship of Moldova. Thus, not all persons born and living on the territory of the Republic of Moldova, who do not have citizenship of other states and who have submitted an application for recognition of the citizenship of our country, will receive it.

An exception is made for persons who, during the consideration of the application, are serving or must serve a criminal sentence associated with imprisonment by a court verdict, have an outstanding criminal record or are under criminal prosecution.

Applications submitted by these persons will be rejected, as well as applications for establishing citizenship of the Republic of Moldova or for recognition as a citizen of Moldova that contain false information or conceal essential data. In this regard, it is proposed to introduce an obligation to coordinate such statements with the Information and Security Service. Member of Parliament Igor Kiriyak also proposed extending the period for consideration of applications by six months.

The bill will be proposed for approval in the first reading at a plenary session of parliament.
