Sentenced to 4 years in prison for domestic violence

On October 3, 2023, the Edinet District Court, Briceni office, pronounced a sentence on a criminal case brought by the Briceni District Prosecutor’s Office.

Thus, according to the sentence, a 23-year-old girl was found guilty of domestic violence, resulting in serious injury to bodily integrity (art. 2011 paragraph (3) letter a) of the Criminal Code), and was sentenced to 4 years and 6 months in prison, with execution of the sentence in the women’s penitentiary.

According to the indictment filed by the state prosecutors, the defendant, being under the influence of alcoholic beverages, pursuing the purpose of applying physical and psychological violence to her mother, with whom she lived together, in a village in the Briceni district, against the background of the tense situation in the family, inflicted multiple blows with fists and legs over various regions of the body, causing the injured party bodily injuries, which according to the forensic expert report were assessed as serious bodily injuries.

According to the statements of the injured party, her daughter consumed alcohol and systematically beat her, and on the last evening when he beat her, he hit her with a cup in the region of her right eye, as a result of which her eye began to bleed.

She had not previously gone to the police as she did not want to cause her daughter any problems and out of pity for her one-year-old grandson.

The defendant fully admitted her guilt in committing the offence and the case against her was therefore examined under a simplified procedure.

The sentence is not final and can be appealed within 15 days to the Balti Court of Appeal.

Note: A person accused of committing a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a final court decision.
