Media: Judge sentenced to 10 years for corruption left Moldova

According to ZdG sources, judge Valeriu Gedreutan, sentenced by the Balti Court of Appeal to 10 years in prison in a case of passive corruption, left Moldova on May 27.

He left the country shortly before the court “corrected” the decision and ordered his detention and imprisonment, zdg.md reports

It is reported that the judge left the country across the Moldovan-Ukrainian border.

The decision to detain and place the judge in a correctional facility has not yet been received by law enforcement agencies.

When asked why the judicial panel did not decide to detain and place Valeriu Gedreutan in prison on April 30 and why it took almost a month to discover and correct the “error”, that is, the exclusion of the phrase “after exhausting all the usual avenues of appeal,” representatives of the Balti Appeal The chambers said there was a “material error” in the order issued at the time and that it was not “corrected” more quickly because the judge in charge was on vacation.

The criminal case was initiated back in February 2016 by the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office based on a complaint.

According to the materials, in early April 2010, the judge was supposed to provide the plaintiff with a private consultation on how to assert in court the ownership of the real estate that was the subject of a dispute between her and her cohabitant. During this discussion, the judge told her that he would help her get the house back and would arrange for the civil case to be transferred to him, the details of which would be discussed later. At the same time, he allegedly demanded and received 200 euros from the woman “for a consultation.”

Shortly thereafter, during the next hearing, the judge informed the applicant that he would consider the case and rule in her favor in exchange for the sum of EUR 6,200.

In April 2014, the woman had to transfer from Italy to the judge the entire requested amount, which the latter received from a banking institution.
