Searches at the airport: three customs inspectors detained
Employees of the National Anti-Corruption Center (NCAC) and the Chisinau prosecutor’s office report details of the morning raids at the Chisinau International Airport.
According to law enforcement agencies, several customs inspectors of the Customs post at the Chisinau International Airport and individuals are under investigation for corruption, reports noi.md
This is a criminal scheme involving the systematic demand of funds from passengers to facilitate the illegal import or export of various goods from the country.
According to the information received, customs inspectors are suspected of demanding and accepting money from passengers ranging from 50 to 1000 dollars for permission to import or export goods from Moldova, bypassing the procedures for paying duties in accordance with current legislation.
This morning, NAC officers conducted 16 searches as part of a criminal case initiated into crimes related to passive and active bribery.
Searches were carried out in the homes, offices and vehicles of persons involved in crimes – customs officers and individuals. Currently, three customs inspectors have been detained for 72 hours, and four more customs inspectors are under investigation.
The criminal prosecution continues under the procedural guidance of prosecutors from the Chisinau Municipal Prosecutor’s Office. The Customs Service also provided support in documenting the case.
