BribeFree: how corruption affects our society and what we can do to fight it

More than 100 refugees from Ukraine in the Republic of Moldova participated in a community event, where they were informed about the fundamental rights they have in our country, which should never be compromised by bribery. The action is part of the campaign “You have the right to live in safety #famous”, implemented by GIZ Moldova in partnership with the National Anti-Corruption Centre, with the aim of counteracting and preventing acts of corruption in Moldova. During the meeting, participants had the opportunity to ask questions, participate in discussions and get to know the institutions where they can turn to if they face corruption.

The opening of the event was attended by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Adrian Efros, who reiterated the need to raise awareness of the negative effects of corruption among both locals and refugees, as well as the importance of constant communication and information about the legal rights that refugees have in our country.

Adrian Efros, Minister of Interior Affairs: “When I took office, the number one priority was and is the fight against corruption and I mentioned to all my colleagues that I have zero tolerance on corruption. I am realistic and understand that these results do not happen overnight and are not immediate, but we are seeing signs that things are moving in the right direction. Our common goal is to fight this scourge and to pay as much attention as possible to both Moldovan citizens and refugees from Ukraine. An honest citizen has no reason to offer a bribe to a state employee, then the attribution in this scourge comes equally to those who receive and those who offer this bribe.”

The guests addressed the main problems refugees face, with a focus on corruption in areas such as education, safety and medicine, reported cases and measures taken, as well as outreach actions to know their rights since they have obtained temporary protection status or are in the process of obtaining it.

As part of the campaign, all those who face acts of corruption are urged to report through:
● calling the NAC’s National Anti-Corruption Line: 080055555;
● filing a complaint directly to the NAC about the corruption that has happened to them.

Please note, “You have the right to live in safety #famous!” is a communication campaign dedicated to preventing and fighting corruption by informing the community of refugees in our country from Ukraine, as well as the population of the Republic of Moldova. The project is funded by the Government of Germany in partnership with the National Anti-Corruption Centre.
